Early report of salmon jumping off Robinson's River this week. We expect to have more details on conditions in the next 24 hours. This isn't unusual for the area as salmon are known to frequent Southwest Brook, Middle Barachois River, Crabbes River and others in the area very early in the season.
An encouraging bit of news for sure!
Congratulations to DFO for getting the Anglers Guide out early. One dealer says he wishes the province would do the same with licenses as it brings business to their doorstep!!! KP

River: Humber
I fished the lower Humber 2 years ago, for a few days in mid August, I landed maby a half dozen grilse at Boom Siding. One evening I lost a 30 plus pounder, or so I was told it was that big by a local guy that had risen the fish earlier, that same evening I landed a 38.5 inch very fat female. According to the salmon meter it would be around 20 lbs, but I thought it looked much bigger. These 2 bigger fish were hooked at Quarry Pool, mabye it was beginners luck. I would love to get back there in the fall, I have a boat but the water is very hard to read, no pools from what I have seen of the river from the shoreline. How much would a Guide cost per day.?
Can someone comment on the cost of a guide? Where in quarry pool did you hook your fish? The tail end of the pool near the sand bar is a hot area.
HDE replied with: Hooked the bigger fish at the tail end and the second straight out from the trail.

River: Humber
Just a couple of questions. When did the first good run of salmon reach big falls last year? When would be the best time to fish the lower humber towards the end of the season? and would you need a boat or could you fish from shore?
Big Falls - Last year the first run hit Big Falls on June 1st, opening day. Fishing was very good for the first 2 weeks. However this is unusual and some years there are no fish to speak of until late in June. Depends on a lot of factors such as ice conditions in the Gulf and the height of water at the Falls.
Lower Humber - Generally the Lower Humber gets going for big fish in August and through to the end of the season. However this is not carved in stone and some big fish are taken in middle/late July from time to time. While you can fish from the shore, it is rather crowded generally and a boat improves your chances of success, providing you know the river. A new fisherman would be very lucky to get a big fish the first time he fishes ther Lower Humber!

No secrets here. The South River that I'm talking about is the one on the Avalon close to Bay Roberts. It turns into Goulds Brook upriver around Makinsons. Spoken like a true sportsman. Our supporters thank you JB.

River Report: Another update on south river: Since salmon season isn't upon us, I figure posting some sea trout information is fitting. Yesterday evening a gentleman landed a monster of a brown trout. I'm guessing it was close to the 15 pound range. Fishing is fairly slow on the river but the trout are big when they're caught. Sea lice and grubs are the bait of choice. Casting a fly rod with a single baited hook is the method I choose. Patience is needed to take brown trout on this river but it pays off when the line tightens. Hopefully the fishing will pick up as the spring season matures. Thanks for the low down on South River... great to hear about those non traditional catches. By any chance would you be able to specify which South River your talking about? Off the top of my head I can think of three. If not, we understand keeping secrets.

River Report: This is a river that is not known for its spectacular salmon fishing in the summers. In the winter/Spring, it does provide some fun with it's smelt and trout. Yesterday, I ventured out on the ice on what is known as the "Motion." After 3 hours, I had a tremendous feed of smelt and a couple of nice trout. Small pieces of shrimp is the bait of choice. It is common for big browns to be caught on this river. 5 - 8 pounders are fairly common. This is a good spot to go for some family fun during the ice fishing season. Keep an eye out to where people are on the ice. Some spots are not safe and caution is recommended at all times. Some parts of this river is licensed so keep an eye out for the signs.
