Let's hook the poachers!

The Provincial Inland Fish Enforcement (IFEP), Department of Justice now has a toll free Report Poachers number. REPORT POACHERS TO IFEP AT 1-877-820-0999 or http://www.stoppoaching.ca

Also, a reminder that the IFE number is on your license!

Please keep in mind our Angler's Voice page. We have been getting some informative views on catch and release etc. Speak up!

We are getting inquiries from numerous people about the Humber, Exploits, Cape Roger, Harry's as well as other popular spots. If you happen to wet a line on any river let us know wether successful or not and we'll post your correspondance. We really enjoy hearing about those off the beaten path rivers that don't get as much fly fishing attention as the others, the ones prone to poaching or a select few that drive or fly the distance. This section of our page gets a lot of traffic during June, July, and August so send us your reports and we'll make sure to post them pronto.

Let's make this the best river reports year yet!!

September 2nd

Fished Gander the 24th and 25th, saw lots of fish but no takers. Had 2 rises at dusk the first evening for about 12 hours in total of fishing. Went out to the Exploits for a couple of hours the next day but it was the same out there, a number of fish showing but no action. Anyone know if anything changed since then? BT

August 30th

Fished Boom Siding this morning from 10:30 to 12:00 landed a small grilse it could not have been in for long it was all nice and silvery all my tags filled now. Can't wait 'till next year. This is my third season and enjoying it more each year.Met a lot of people good conversations and lots of tips.

There's one down side i would like to mention and that is the amount of garbage mostly Tim Horton coffee cups I've seen and picked up.I think that if we enjoy the outdoors so much and obviously we do we shouldn't be leaving this around our rivers and parking places. RMV

August 24th

Just returned from a few days fishing on the island. We fished home pool on Harry's River for a few hours on the 18th and saw lots of fish jumping in the pool and out into Georges Lake. No takers after trying numerous flies. Water low and warm. We also hit Flat Bay pretty hard on the 18th and 19th. Tried lots of pools and lots of flies and no takers. Lots of fish holding in the deep water pools but again warm and low. On the 20th we tried Boom Siding on the Lower Humber. Only 5 people there. Two fish seen and no takers. Rivers was void of people by 9am. Same thing at Quarry pool. On the 22nd we tried Forks pool on the Grand Codroy. We saw the most fish there and three other anglers. Fish jumping, rolling, splashing all over. Some small submarines in there too! Had one vicious rise that created a wake hitting both sides of the river. I have never seen a rise like that before. I was using a small half body dry fly (brown/green) fished under the surface of the water at the tail end of pool where you would think the water was too slow to hold a fish. The salmon never came back. It was raining slighty there so it might be a good spot now if the water has cooled off. Same water conditions as all the rivers we saw. Photo is of home pool.

August 17th

Just sending a resposne to a fellow angler who had caught a fish on the St. Geniveve on the Northern Penninsula recently. I had a buddy who caught one on the Castors River, last year in the later part of July, it was about 61cm, 6 lb fish, with the same issue of all the flesh inside and stomach contents being white. GF

Fished big Falls Thursday evening and Friday morning from Deer Lake reef down to below Brook Pool , never saw a fish or moved a fish. It's the worst I've saw Big Falls in all the 40 plus years I've fished there. Reading some of the reports about Harry's and Flat Bay with no fish , the same can be said for Big Falls. I know that a lot of fish went through on the high water levels but I cannot believe there would not be a few fish moving in at times. Last week I spent 4 days with some other friends at Big falls with the same results.
Maybe the results at Harry's and Flat Bay has nothing to do with the 4 fish retaining but just a early run of fish and no late run. I find it very ironic how Spawn and other groups seem to want to jump on Sid Styles and his group and every opportunity.   DW  (SPAWN isn't jumping on anyone and never did...just being realistic.  We'll say it again - At one time anglers retained as many fish as went through the Gallants trap this year.  What does that say?? It says that the river system can support thousands more fish.  The number now entering is a mere pittance compared to past runs.  It just isn't ready for big time removal of the stock.  Co-editor)/p>

Fished Big Falls from Aug 8 - 15 water level is perfect. Not many fish showing. Managed to hook 8 and tag 2 in the 7 days of fishing.  C&TC

-  I  caught a fish with white flesh on the Forteau several years ago. DFO said that they had reports of  many white fleshed fish that year. The reason given was fish gorging on Capelin before entering the river.  IG

- Just a followup to CM's comments on the white colored flesh of his salmon; have experienced the same phenomenon in our fish taken at Flat Bay Brook over the last number of years. Have attributed the white flesh to an absence of foodstuff ( query arthropod ) in the salmon's diet.
They all have been lively fat fish, typical of Flat Bay, and have not noted any difference in their taste. The phenomenon has prompted our family to joke amongst ourselves the merit of retaining and putting a tag in these white-fleshed salmon when the surrounding rivers offer a more visually appetizing speciman on the plate.Nonetheless, the fishing this summer has been spectacular on all Bay St. George rivers and even my brother was able to hook some fish on his green bodied fly. Keep a tight line! SO

Answer to question about white flesh in salmon...From DFO scientist.

Yes the color of the flesh in a fish is related to it diet.  The colour (red - orange) comes from caretonids, the same basic compound that gives a carrot it's color.  Salmon get these beta caretonids from the food they eat i.e. shellfish, certain copepods etc  and fish as well as other organisms that they eat that have been preying on these food items.
The color of the flesh of returning salmon is dependant on their diet and where they have been feeding.  Any salmon that spends at least one full year at sea has the colour we all expect (red - orange).
However repeat spawning salmon (i.e. consecutive spawners) that go out in the spring of the year and return to spawn the same summer generally have a paler colour to their flesh and sometimes they are even white.  This is irrespective of the condition of the fish - as noted the fish can be very fat and still be white.  This is because of their diet whilst feeding out in the bays does not contain as much caretonids.
A fish that spawns in the fall absorbs bodily tissues to assist with egg/sperm development as well as the necessary nutrients to survive overwinter.  Almost all kelts when they leave freshwater are very pale to white.
Also most NF salmon greater than 55cm are repeat spwners save a few MSW. Certainly over 95% of salmon betweem 55 and 62 cm are repeat spawners and generally will be paler than than their smaller counterparts 49-55 cm.
I referenced consecutive repeat spawners i.e. fish that go out in the spring of the year and return to spawn the same summer - these fish spend between 3 weeks(minimun) to 3 months reconditioning and likely return to the river during late July and early August - some people may believe that this constitutes a run of fish, but sadly no.  But for the most part these are the fresh fish that enter the rivers after the main run in late June - early July.
To further confuse things there is what we call an alternate repeat spawner i.e. a fish that leaves freshwater in the spring of the year and returns the following year , and this fish has spent another year at sea. Given that this fish is likely to be over 50 cm when it leaves freshwatyer it will very likely be over 63 cm when it returns and may even be up 70+ cm.  This is because it eats much larger prey and can grow that much faster.  These fish generally are the earliest fish to enter the rivers and arrive at the same time as the 2SW fish - the earliest run component in any river.  But alas, they are just large grilse.
The majority of repeat spawners return to NL rivers less than 63CM.
Hope this does't confuse things more.  (Thanks for your prompt answer!  Co-editor)

- Just reporting a great year fishing St. Genevieve River on the Northern Pen. On the morning of Aug 13th, I decided to take a run into the river to try and tag my remaining two fish. I did successfully in about a half an hour of fishing. The last fish was a beauty, 60cm, very close to 6lbs, just a beautiful fresh fish. That is until I cut her open to remove the gut, the fiesh, spawn included was completely white on the inside. I have never encountered this before, I have heard that slinks are white inside, and some trout are two, but this fish was no slink, very fresh and very thick, put up a tremendous fight and from the outside looked completely normal. The eggs themselves looked very normal except for the coloration..Does anyone have any idea about this or encountered this aswell. Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks CM

August 15th

Fished Big Falls from Aug 8 - 15 water level is perfect. Not many fish showing. Managed to hook 8 and tag 2 in the 7 days of fishing. TC

August 12th

- Was at Harry's R. this morning, Gallants area...No one fishing and DFO is in the process of removing the trap. saw several fish, large ones among them.  There was a guy there who had no glasses on and could see fish all over the place! It was incredible...I had polaroids on and that's the only way I could see (some) them.  I asked him to put the glasses on and then he really started to see them and point them out - "Comes from years on the river here".
My father in law was the same way.  Is it possible some humans have polarized eyes!! :O)  PF

- Fished Boom Siding today - storm of wind up through the brook, not good for fishing.  Did manage to hook and retain a beauty of  a grilse, just under the limit. Only one  I saw  for 2 hrs iI was there,.Only 2 other s fishing - I  guess the wind has something to do with it. No sea trout either,  one fish left to get then i'm done for the year.  GP

Just wondering if anyone is aware of any recent success, on any Rivers located on the Avalon.
Salmonier Area, North Harbour, Placentia, etc.  Thanks  GD

- Can anybody give me an idea what the water levels are like at Big Falls (Upper Humber) area? I would like to take my son fishing for the last trip of the year. pv

- I'm not sure who answered my e-mail that I sent in late July about where I could fish near the Corner Brook area, but I would like to thank them very much. On Aug 1st I tagged 2 fish on the Exploits, one being a male, 62cm. On Aug 3rd I hooked 3 on Brook Pool, & released 1, lost the other 2. From there we went to Corner Brook, I have never fished the lower Humber, While driving up a road one morning, i saw a man walking to his car with fishing gear on , & he showed me where Ledingham Shoals where, I then fished there with no luck. Fom there I fished Boom Siding on 3 occasions, & released a fish each time, rose many & lost 2. On Aug 1st I fished at Quary pool, there was a man there who said he rose a fish 5 times, & he rose it 5 times while we were there, he said it was 30lbs plus. When he left shortly after, I gave it a try myself, & within 5 minutes I hooked it , however the battle lasted only 5 minutes, my tippet broke in the knot, it was the first fish i had hooked over 8 pounds. A half hour after that I was into another that I landed, it measured 36.5 inches, my son in law took a couple of pictures & after a few minutes of holding her in the current, away she went.I wont forget that night any time soon. Anyway thanks again, the info was priceless. HE

August 9th

To KF; The fish in North East Placentia has mostly all gone thru. There are a few coming in but the main run has gone up. This is off from other years were you get the main run come up late July and stay in the river for a few weeks. Right now the fish are in Placentia Junction Pond and moved up the head waters thru Healey's Pond. Meanwhile for those that have noticed, there are people working on this river for the past few weeks. INCO has funded a project for North East River to install new spawning grounds in 3 places on this river. (Compensation for taking Sandy Pond.) The first was just up the river from Placentia Junction pond and the one they are working on as of today is next to the Park on Argentia access road. The last one is below the falls and should be starting in the next week or so. This should be good for this river and a must to enforce in the coming years. Also like most rivers, the return was great again this year. Hope to see more in the next few years to come.

Fished Boom Siding today. Storm of wind up through the brook, not good for fishing, did manage to hook and retain a beaty of a grilse, just under the limit, only one I saw for 2 hrs while I was there. Only 2 other fishing, I guess the wind as something to do with it. No sea trout either, one fish left to get then I'm done for the year. GP

August 8th
- Fished Boom Siding last evening Aug 7th from the boat with GH. Saw a few fish; water is still about 18in to high for real good fishing. GH hooked one from the boat and we saw 2 others hooked, none landed. Sea trout were scarce as well.   KC

- Just spent 2 days fishing Flat Bay Brook. The river is dry with no fish. I feel the early reports were correct with a good run of fish in late June and early July. It seems that the run that would normally go through in early July went through early in late June and gave a false impression that this would be an extraordinary year, but not so. Can You believe that DFO was stupitd enough to open this little fragile river for 4 fish without any science. Go figure. In the meantime if they are stupid enough to do this again they should open all the rivers in Bay St. George for  4 fish and spread the pressure around. Can Yyu imagine the pounding Harry's River is taking this year. Its time for Sid Styles and his imaginary conservation group to to smarten up. Too bad - We will pay for this in 3 to 4 years with low returns. RJM
(Hear hear!!  We said this the day the announcement was made about making Harry's a Class two and at the same time making Flat Bay Class two  (based on Harry's returns!.)....Utter nonsense based on a less than maximum return on Harry's River.  Let us state it again!! YEARS AGO MORE FISH WERE RETAINED THAN WENT THRIOUGH THE GALLANT'S COIUNTING FENCE this year.  This is irresponsible management on the part of Fisheries and Oceans Canada....I.e. MISMANAGEMENT of the resource!  Co-editor)

August 7th

- I was wondering if anyone is still fishing North East River near Placentia. I checked recently with no signs or fisherman or fish. Perhaps this was just an off day, Please respond. Thanks -  KF

August 6th

- I'm wondering if anybody has fished on the Salmonier river in Burin lately? I'm heading out there this weekend.  TS

August 3rd
- Fished the upper Terra Nova from the evening of July 30 to the morning of August 3.  Water was cold and rising steadily.  Salmon were plentiful.  Hooked 23, landed 16 (all released of course).  I've been fishing the area for 10 or 12 years.  The fish this year were the healthiest and largest that I have ever seen on the river.  Many were exceptionally large grilse with lots of fight.  I released three 6 pounders and many more in the 4 and 5 lbs range.  Some of the fish were actually quite silvery and powerful enough to run well into my backing.  All hook-ups were on the first pass with the fly; they were flying exceptionally well.   Last year I reported dismal fishing on this section of the river and later learned that the failed construction of a new fish-way at the bottom of Terra Nova lake was stopping the fish from getting up river.  This year, judging from the strength and good condition of the salmon that I landed, It seems to me that the new fishway is helping them get up river quicker and with less strain.  That the new fishway is the cause of the presence of healthy, strong fish is speculation on my part, but it seems likely given the sharp improvement between this year and all the years gone by.  In years past, all the salmon on I hooked above Terra Nova lake were black and rarely strong enough to take out line.  This years fish, for some reason, were strong and rearing to go.  Has anybody else noticed an improvement on the Terra Nova this year?  The new fishway seems to be making a huge difference.  Hats of those responsible for it's construction (even if last year was a bit of a mess!)

August 2nd
- Fished Boom Siding, Lower Humber yesterday below the bridge from 3 pm to 6:30 pm.  Fish showing steadily all over the place from the time I arrived until leaving.  Some fish were very close.  Saw two large ones. Of all the fish seen only one was brught.  Only 5 anglers...no one had any luck up to the time I left.  Great day - wish I could have stayed longer.    More anglers were showing up for the evening fishing.  JW said he took a grilse there night before.  KP

- CM reported he and son son MM along with JC had great angling over the weekend at Big East - 11 fish on in four hours.  All fish dark.  DC also reported that TP from North Shore Bay of Islands filled four tags at Big East on the weekend - again all dark fish

-  Corner Brook Stream trap now has 130 fish through with four grilse counted his morning.  Last year's total up to Sept. 9th was 94!!.

August 1st
- July 27 - Fished Harry's at Dhoon Lodge above and below bridge. Fish seen none taken.
- July 28 - Fished at Dhoon Lodge above bridge, a few fish around, retained one girlse 56 cm.
- July 29 - Fished Dhoon Lodge from Robaires to the bridge, a few fish around, retained one girlse 58 cm.  KSR

- Fished Boom Siding thanks to CC his first time fishing their from his canoe and his first fish this summer nice grilse ( on a bug) , had a great day rose about 10 fish.  Saw lots of fish all along the banks up close to the shore some only a few feet from shore notice to anglers only a short lines required , BE

July 29th
-
Fished Harry's this evening, a few fish under bridge, seen a few jumpnig in Alexanders, had one big one on for a while and lost it - no one fishing and the fish are not taking very good either, river is perfeect for fishing to now water is just right.  GP
(I was there this morning at the bridge and there was 5 salmon below it....two large ones, one very large.  One perton fishing Alexander's...he gave up. I saw his truck later at North Brook.  Talked to the FNI Guardians at Ledge Pool...They saw one person fishing down river and that was it.  The run has slowed a good bit - just 5 last night through the trap, all grilse.
Total as of today 2206 small and 285 large.  Given this low total the river should never have been changed to a Class 2 !  - Co-Editor)

-  Fished Boom Siding, Lower Humber,  yesterday for a short while. The wind was very strong and coming up-river.  Hooked one nice sea trout and saw a guy land a bigger one across river.  Saw a couple of fish move...Only 6 people fishing and everyone complained about the wind. One thing that surprised me was seeing two people with Spey Rods when I got there, then another a bit later.  I was also using a Spey and that was the only reason I got any line out at all.
One time long rods were the only thing used and now they seem to be coming back.
Also - Maybe the late Max Rabbitts was right..."When the wind is on their tails they won't take".  KP

July 27th

As of this morning the  Exploits count at Bishops Falls now stands at - GET THIS!!!! -  39,600!!!!

- Salmon are in at rocky river. CB

Salar from Blue Belton Productions on Vimeo.

- Went to Boom Siding, Lower Humber for a look-see last evening.  Nineteen anglers there, three above the bridge  and the rest below.  Four of them in boats.  Saw several salmon roll/jump, no real big ones and didn't see anything hooked while there. The water is "in-the-woods".  One angler left shortly after I got there - he had the limit - 1/2 dozen nice sea trout.
Steady Brook Shoals had two boats that I watched through binoculars for a while - no action at that time. No one at Quarry Pool (water is pretty high for there) KP

- As of this morning's count the Corner Brook Stream trap has had 118 salmon. The total for all of last year was 93!

July 26th

- Fished at Cape Roger this past week.  Water has been really high.  A few fish hooked at Pointer’s Hole, the Whale’s Back and the Salmon Hole (1-2 per day tagged).  Some but not a lot of fish yet.  The big run is not in yet. 10 – 12 anglers at the hole each evening and morning.  Fish are not flying well since water started to drop.   BT

- Hi - I will be in the St Anthony area for a couple of days, any suggestions on where to go for a flick in that area ?  DB
We were in St. Anthony for a few days earlier in July and stayed at Triple Falls RV park.  It is on a licensed river but at the time there were no salmon there yet, so I don't know what it would be like now.  It is a very small little river.  The man who owns/runs the park seemed to have good knowledge of that river though and might be able to point you in a good direction.  He was very helpful.  The park is 6 kms outside of St. Anthony.

July 25th

- The Western Star carried a photo of an angler with a 40 lb fish he released on the Lower Humber after a 40 minute battle.  A witness reported the guide hooked the fish and passed him the rod to play it!!  Fish was 44" long and 25" in girth.  Editor

- I am debating whether or not to take a trip to the Gander River on the Aug 6 & 7 weekend to try and fill my last two tags.  I am not really familiar with the river and have really only fished a few times on the Straight Shore and Pat's Pool and also the Slaughter Hole, but that was about ten years ago.  Can anyone tell me if there are many salmon around that time of year and are there better places than that to fish than the pools I know.  B&B

Hi - I will be in the St Anthony area for a couple of days, any suggestions on where to go for a flick in that area ?  DB

July 23rd
- This is not a river report, more a request for information.  I will be in the Pasadena area for a few days in mid-August on a family vacation, so no full days fishing or anything like that.  I was wondering if anybody could direct me to a few places on the Lower Humber where I might wet a line from shore for a couple of hours or so.  RB   (Quarry Pool, Boom Siding, Strawberry Hill...lots of place to fish from shore on the lower Humber.  Right now the water is high - hopefully things will be better when you get here - Co-editor)

- Well, salmon fishing has been fairly good in Shoal Harbour River till now. Seems as though the fish have stop running in. Could it be that it is over or are they waiting for more rain and/or are the poachers catching them all. Lets see what the next few days bring.  Cross your fingers.  Thanks RR

July 22nd

- Fished Harry's this morning around 10 am started ar Alexander's Pool where we saw a few fish...no takers. Moved to the Gallant's Brigde.  A large salmon  (10 - 12 lb) and a grilse lying below it  and several fish above the bridge, two large ones at 10 12 lb - tried everything - (except the right fly :O). Not a move from any of them. Dry flies, wet flies, cigar bomber...no difference.  Talked to a guy who  came from up-river.  He landed a 61 cm grilse at Green Cabin and released one about 15 lb (not sure if that one was at Green or Home Pool). The run has slowed considerably... Count at the trap now is 1868 small and 260 large fish = 2128 toal.  KP

Below: Alexander's Pool, Harry's River
ALEXANDERS

- Not as many anglers about but people are fishing and, sorry to say, we're not getting reports.  Had a call from KC who relayed that TB had on three large fish a couple of evenings ago at Leddingham Shoials, Lower Humber. One around 20 lb the others estimated at 10 and 15 lb.  Water is high.  A few anglers at Boom Siding last evening.  DC saw on angler in a boat with a grilse on that was subsequently lost.  "Water in the woods".  KP

July 20th

BigFish
Above:  When long time SPAWN supporter Richard Hall (R) and his wife Sue came to Bay St. George for a brief
visit
recently they brought along a wooden carving of a 45 1/2" salmon that he bought at a US auction.  The fish
was carved  from an outline of the original fish. Accepting the "trophy" for SPAWN is Bob Mercer. The
carving is already gracing the wall at our office - 93 West St. in Corner Brook. Richard, a former Air Force
Officer was stationed at Ernest Harmon Air Base in Stephenville
, Newfoundland.

July 18th
- Very poor fishing above Big Falls, spent last 3 weeks there, two salmon taken.  Water very high.  vb

- New high at Corner Brook Stream trap.  22 fish through Sat/Sun/Mon bringing the total to 89.  This is two higher than the total for all of last year!  Could be a request for catch and release angling next summer...We'll see what the nexty few weeks bring.  SPAWN

July 16th

- Fished Harrys River July 16th. River still bit high. Not much on the go - a few fish jumping, managed to retain a 4-Lb fish. Went to Home Pool - a few big ,big fish there jumping. iIwonder why we get idiots that walk right out beside you and start casting over your line and they think there doing nothing wrong! Hopefully this ass.... reads this and he knows who he is ,from home pool last evening.GP

July 15th

- Home Pool Harry's River last night. 6 Rods including an 18 FOOT BOAT AND MOTOR. Not many fish showing. Rose 2. Witnessed 2 retained and 1 hooked and lost. Big beaver bobbin' around the mouth of the river too. Not too impressed with the gentleman who figured it was a good idea to anchor off in the pool and let his boat drift down. Then when he was leaving START THE ENGINE  (while sitting in the pool) and take off back up Georges Lake.  (A real sportsman eh!! - Co-editor)

-  Fished the Salmonier River on Salmonier Line July 13th from daylight to about 8pm.  Hooked about 7 fish, landed and tagged 1 about 4.5 lbs.  Lots of anglers on river in the morning and evening.  Only seen one other fish landed and tagged.  Lots of fish, not many takers.  Water was low.  Good to see a few father/son combo's on the river!  SC

July 14th

July 8 to 13th - Bay St. George and Harry's. All of the BSG rivers were at good levels and producing fish during this period - virtually nobody around! The Branches of the Codroy were still fishing OK early on Sunday morning but the levels rose by close to 2 feet very quickly. After lunch I visited the Pocket, which was as high as I have ever seen it. River bank-to-bank and the colour of chocolate milk. The BSG rivers were still fishable on Sunday (July 11) evening, but raging the next morning. The Harry's was raging at Gallants on Monday, in fairly heavy rain most of the day. Plenty of fish, some quite large, showing in Home Pool, but the rest of the river unpromising. One of the locals proclaimed "this is fit for nothin' but huntin' ducks" ! Good fishing reported at Bishops Falls on the morning of the 13th, with quite a few anglers retaining fish. JB

July 13th

Fished the Straits on Gambo Pond. Locals say the main run is through but there are still plenty of fish coming through. Hooked four on Saturday and Sunday and another dozen hooked on the pool. Tried Triton Brook at Rocky Rattle and did not see a fish. PO'F

Hi Guys, Returned from Lomond (june 27th to july 3rd) fished tidal pool and up to flat pool for the week. Water levels good and cold. Lots of anglers around and fish all through-out the river (from what I heard all way up past the lodge). Managed to hook, play 18 and fill 4 tags with some nice plump 4-5lbs grisle in the seven days at about 3-5 hours a day. 1 owl, 1 sea otter, a visiting stag caribou and 1 very large black bear summed up the other wildlife. With the mountains, the river, the wildlife and of course the fish - it's truly heaven on earth. :) MF

July 12th

Spent a couple of days at Little Salmonier. Hooked a few fish but it is getting harder all the time as water levels are falling steadily and it is now getting low. Rain needed, Where is DFO?? No ATVs are allowed below the highway to protect the wetlands and there are no licenced trails but saw numerous yahoos on machines. Came out on one group of illegals and they were trying to jig fish out of a small pool on the lower river. Stopped when they saw us. Where is enforcement?? Honest anglers are walking ten miles down over the country carrying gear and fishing properly. The "Trailer Park Boys" crowd are poaching and driving around tearing up the country and getting away with it!! Get some enforcement on Little Salmonier!!

July 11th

Fished Big Barachois Brook today and had no luck. However there was 6 salmon all around 5lbs dead in different places, started at river mouth extending up to wardens shack(approx 1km). These fish were very healthy outside of being dead and the ones I inspected were found to have no markings on them at all. Strange or maybe not. I will be contacting DFO to notify. Hopefully not a two footed weasel upto no good. RP

I fished Strawberry pool on Sat Jul 10 and Sun Jul 11 and there is a lot of fish moving . Strawberry is above softnose pool and below Island pool. On sat I realeased a very big salmon which was over 36 inchs long and my friend hooked two and lost them. On sunday I retained a 23 inch grilse and my friend hooked another two fish. This is the best fishing I seen in Harry's river since 1997! SL

July 9th

Thanks for the info! I found my way around Salmonier on the Avalon... There were a few fish around on the flats that I could see, and seen one guy take one... There were many anglers around, and a few said that fish were taken early morning. I was there in the afternoon, lots of fish jumping and could see a few but they were staying on the bottom and not taking any flies at all! Going to try some new flies over the weekend see how that works out.. All in all lots of sign of fish it was a great experience!!

July 8th

Fished the Overfalls on the Codroy the last 2 days saw only1 salmon taken but saw many large fish. The water is the lowest level that I have seen. Also fished the Isle Aux Morts and saw several fish taken, water is low but fishable and lots of fish in the river.

One angler tried to tag a fish but the tag was missing the inner locking unit. Talked with another angler and learned that this tag problem is fairly common with tags purchased at cdn tire store in PAB and this problem has been reported to fisheries people. jb

Angler needs some clarification. Let us know if you can help him out.
Thanks for the great info! I have gone out and bought myself a fly rod and am heading out to do some fishing... I do need a little bit of clarification on some information in my Anglers guide about the Salmoniner River that I am hoping someone can help me with.... It says under "Closed Area" the Salmonier River "From 168 meters on west side of upper of bridge to bait and spinner signs, and 240 meters downstream to ocean on east side of upper part of the bridge." I am unsure of what this means, and what bridge they are talking about. There is an old concrete walking Bridge.. is this what they are talking about.. and does this mean you cannot fish right next to the bridge... (It is right across from a guest home) It looks like there is a lot of foot traffic all around it.. I am just worried because not being from here and very new at fishing Salmon I do not want to be in the wrong spot and not know it!
PS - I have also heard that the North Arm River in Holyrood is good for Salmon...anyone hear anything about this place??

Fished Home Pool Harry's River yesterday. A lot of large salmon in the mouth of the lake. Spotted 5 or 6 grilse sitting in the pool but not even looking at a fly. Water is low and warm. Good showing of salmon and DFO. Nice to see. Getting sick and tired of picking up trash around the area. CC

Hey guys heading out to Harry's or up to Roddicton this weekend. Just wondering if there are any fish around and what pools? Getting axnious about getting out and hooking my first salmon. Never had any time the last couple of years!

July 7th

Hi there...fished Beaver Brook last night at the underground hole....no fish taken...but what an awesome spectacle as the salmon swim through this cave....unbelievable. Great spot to check out on a tour of the northern peninsula ..boardwalk all the way in from the parking lot. Saw plenty of fish but no luck for me ( again!!!!)...just a pleasure to be there. SC

July 6th

Fished the Gander River Third Pond area last week. On Tuesday i tagged 2, released 2, lost 1, and rose 3 more. The next day I tagged 1 and lost 1. On the following day I tagged 1, released 1, lost 1, and rose another. All and all the fishing was good!! PB

Fished Flat Bay River today. Released two large grilse at Strawberry Pool and rose another. EP Released one at Walker's and had another on briefly plus struck 2 more. Not a lot of fish showing except for occasional bursts, but overall a great day. Another angler said he released 4 on Friday. KP

Fished the Gander River 4th Pond pools last weekend. Hooked two fish. Good sign of salmon in the river but water too high for Petrie's or Back Run yet. Looking forward to a good July.

Report from Fred Parsons at Exploits Salmon Centre said 20,000 + have now passed through Bishops Falls fishway!

July 5th

To WS - Thanks for the offer, unfortunately I was back home by the time I got the msg. On Sunday evening my son and I fished Salmon River at the steel bridge. I hooked one and lost it, we both had several rises until the young fellow fell in the river and decided he had enough ! I went back this morning and rose a few but I had to get on the road early so I was off the river again by 8 am. Thanks again. DB

Fished Long Harbour River (Fortune Bay) July 1, 2, 3, 4. My brother and I managed to hook 7 fish in total. 7 Mile Pool had a good sing of fish on July 1st and 2nd, but less activity on the 3rd. Seemed like we hit the tail end of a good run. Reports were that thousands of fish went through in the latter part of June. Water levels were perfect. We hiked out on the evening of the 3rd to catch our boat on the 4th. Never saw any fish on the lower part of the river.

Fished Terra Nova River (Glovertown) July 1 was only there 1 hour hooked and landed a nice five and a half ponder, fished again on the 2nd and hooked and released a 3 pound salmon, on the 4th went down for a few flicks in the evening and hooked and landed a nice 4 lb salmon, all tags used up for that area, fantastic fishing...... On Sunday July 4 went over to Middle Brook in Gambo and fished the upper pool, a lot of salmon , watched as 4 salmon were hooked and landed around 12 noon.... This is a great year for salmon, it is a great year for all the younger salmon fishers to get hooked, but just remember conserve what we as Newfoundlanders consider a great pastime and report poachers. (RJ)

Fished Butlers on the Salmonier River Sunday evening, July 4th. My first trip for the year. Good sign of fish. Lots of parr in the river as well. It was about 6pm before I got in there. Had a few rises, but no takers. By about 8:30pm, after the sun went down, the fish started moving on. Other anglers said there had been a couple of fish caught earlier in the day. All in all, there was a healthy sign of fish.... and a healthier sign of wardens to boot. Met 3 wardens when we were almost back to the road. It was completely dark, and there was no indication of anyone around until there was a light shining in my eyes.....needless to say, my legs were a little rubbery after that. In no time, 3 more wardens came to the entrance of the trail where we were chatting with the other wardens. Then two more fishermen came by and the warden said they were also waiting on two more wardens down by the river. Great to see wardens working, but I'm not sure about their tactics. 8 wardens in one area, of which 6 were waiting near the road (a half hour walk from the river).... a lot of river area can be covered if 8 wardens actually patrolled the river banks as opposed to roadways. Maybe there was something bigger going on, but there was no sign of any illegal activity at Butler's. Nonetheless, it's great to see a good run of fish, along with lots of enforcement. HL

Hey fished #1 on Indian Bay River June 30th my son who is 10 hooked and retained his first 2 salmon and I retained 2. Went back again on July 2nd and had another great trip - me and my son again hooked and retained 2 fish each. Water levels are high but fishing is great. NL

July 4th

Fished Pipers Hole on july 1st, never had any luck but watched a fellow angler hook and loose a nice grilse. Lots of salmon but nothing flying. Fished Cape Roger on friday, july 2. Had a couple rises and watched a fellow angler hook and retain one fish. The river was absolutely full with salmon, but nothing flying. Also fishing Salmonier River in Burin later that evening no sign of any salmon whatsoever. - TS

Fished Quarry Pool, Lower Humber this evening intil 7:30. All I saw was a Loon. Another angler came in for a chat and jumped up to start fishing when he saw a fish jump at the lower end. An third angler showed up around 7 pm. Hope they had good luck. KP

Salmon are now being released through the trap on Torrent River with 45 heading on upstream on July 2nd. We can expect this number to increase dramatically in the next week and fish were being held back until work at Clifty Falls was completed. Numerous salmon were waiting to get into the fishway! Good news. (From RR at Torrent Salmon Centre)

Hello: DB drop by my house on Sunday when you get in. Just ask where WS lives. I live in Burnt Village and I can tell you where to fish on any river on the Northern tip. Salmon river, St. Genevieve, Castor, St.Pauls or Beaver Brook. Drop by.... ws

Just talked to FL who said he fished Cabin Pool, Upper Humber and had on 7 fish. He retained one, had on two big ones - one of which he estimated at 25 lb and broke it off rather than try to play it out. He said 10 anglers were fishing there but the pool has changed from what it used to be like.

Good fishing repported at Harry's River, Crabbe's River, Robinson's River and Middele Barachois. At Harry's the makings of an improved run is underway. Really too early to tell since these could simply be early fish. Don't forget that at one time the number of fish retained on Harry's exceed the total number going through the Gallants trap in the past few years, so the river isn't even near to reaching it's spawning capacity. Editor

July 3rd

Hi - I will be in the Main Brook area on Sunday evening, july 4. Any tips on where I should fish on Salmon River within walking distance from the road ? Thanks DB (Beaver Brook is nearby - When you cross the Northern Penninsula from Plum Point turn right at the intersection to Main Brook/Conche. You'll come to a place clearly marked with a sign near a boardwalk that takes you to Beaver Brook...great place to fish and I have every confidence you'll see salmon there. As for Salmon River, about the only place I can think of would be to get to the bridge that crosses the highway on Salmon River and walk up or down from there. Not sure what is down river from there but heading up you'll hit the pools. Iron Gate is one I can think of and right now it should alive with salmon - editor)

July 1st

Happy Canada Day!

Harry's River.  Plenty of anglers!  Saw a fish released at Alexander's Pool.  Several fish lying below the Gallants bridge.  By the end of today 1,000 salmon will have passed throuigh the trap above Gallants.  160 of those are over 63 cm with the largest at 84 cm.  Net marks evident on quite a few.
Could this be the start of one of the biggest runs Harry's has seen in years.  With the two fish limit more are making it to the spawning beds - More fish spawning = more offspring = better chance of survival = bigger returns.  A no-brainer.  KP

June 30th

I fished the Exploits this week with fellow angler GH. We fished the Grand Falls rattle on Sunday evening. I released one fish, and lost another. Several other risen. GH hooked and lost a fish and moved quite a few fish. The Exploits seems full of fish. On Monday morning we fished just above the bridge on the TCH for a few hours. GH release a fish and several other anglers hooked and retained several fish. I wish we had the ability to know how many fish enter the Humber. The anglers on the Exploits get reliable numbers from the fish way at Bishops Falls as well as the facility at the Grand Falls. KC

June 29th

Fished Flat Bay River yesterday and today.  Tagged 1 salmon Monday at Walker's  and another this morning at Tiger Hole...released another at Strawberry.  A few fished seen moving.   A few taken by other anglers (plenty on the river). FP

I was wondering if anyone had any info on Castors River, if there are many salmon running yet, and water levels, thanks HE.

Hi there... fished Lomond River last night. Plenty of fish but hard to get a rise, only saw one taken down river below Campbell's pool... water levels good... had a few strikes but no takers.... should be good for those that can make it in the next few days. SC

June 28th

Hey all, After reading the report that WS sent in about Salmon River, Main Brook, myself and two friends decided to go over for a look.  I know where WS usually fishes a lot so we went to that spot on Sunday, June 27th.  The water level in the river is gradually going down, but the conditions are near perfect right now.  We had great success using mostly green and yellow tipped blue charms.

We got to the river at 4:30 AM and my friend hooked a fish on his third cast.  I helped him land it and before he had his cleaned, I was into a grilse that I released as it was a little small for my liking.  I'm glad I did as I tagged a nice 5.5 lb 61 cm grilse a little later.  In all, my friend tagged 2, released 2 and lost 1.  I tagged 1, released 1 and lost 5 more.  The other guy who was with us tagged 2 for himself.  There were two other anglers who showed up there as well, and one guy tagged 1 and lost 2 and his friend tagged 2 and lost 1.  The fish are very fresh with sea lice still on them.  Lots of fight in them and very aggressive takers.

What a day was had by all.  On another note, there is an issue I have with the new tag system.  I have my tags in my backpack and I did not leave them in a bag.  Yesterday, I also had my fly repellent in the same pouch as my tags.  When I returned home, I was taking all of my gear out of the backpack so I could wash it, and I discovered that on one of my tags, the print was almost completely gone as some fly repellent had gotten on it.  This is a caution to other anglers that this could happen, and now on that tag I cannot see the dates in some places.  I guess I will have to go to DFO to get a replacement tag.  Bit of a pain in the you know where, but I am glad that tag is not the tag I would have had to use yesterday because there is no way I would have known where to punch the date out because it is completely illegible in some sections.  Thought that I would pass that on as a warning to other anglers that you should keep the tags in a bag, and keep it away from your fly repellent. DR  (Thanks for this good information!)

Hi there, I am new to the province, and can't wait to get out salmon fishing! I have had a few concerns and questions that I do not know where to find the answer, and I came across this website which seems to be very helpful. I wanted to fish on the Salmonier River, and have a general idea of where to go.  BUT I do have one question.... I do not have a fly rod, I did buy my tags and want to know is it ok to fish with rod, reel and lure?? Also if there are any other good places to hook some salmon for a new comer to this beautiful province! Thanks!  MT  (Definitely not permitted to use a lure!!  It's fly-fishing -only on scheduled rivers.  The list of those rivers can be found in your anglers guide that comes with the license. Also -  you CAN use spinning gear in unscheduled waters and in marine waters but any salmon yoiu hook must be released.
As for good places to hook salmon - right now is the start of the peak two weeks of salmon runs and most rivers that have salmon should be good.  Sounds like you are on the east coast so Salmonier, North Harbour, Colinet, Biscay Bay are some you could look at. Others may have other suggestions for the Avalon.  If you are planning to travel around there's plenty to choose from all over the Island right now.  Editor)

- Fished  the Gander at first pond Sat and Sun.  Struck several fish, had some great rises and hooked one fish each day. The water was quite high (was up to the big rock below the cabin) but its receding quickly. Only 4 waders on Sat and 2 on Sun. JHB

Re: "Torrent seems really hot (busy), though few fish ( 6 total when I was there) in trap. Good luck all. KG"

I have a dumb question... Do you mean hot as in temperature, or hot as in a lot of people? We are heading up the end of the week, so I was just wondering what we might be in for?

Thanks...BT  (Plenty of fish in the river...don't go by the trap count. DFO is/was working on it at the head of the fishway. Since then all work may have been completed...Call the Salmon Centre for info. Editor)

June 27th

Hi all. Back from a few days fishing to River of Ponds. Hooked and landed grilse in R.O.P below the bridge, and Torrent. Saw lots of fish at Big East as well. A few large salmon hooked . Torrent seems really hot, though few fish ( 6 total when I was there) in trap. Good luck all.  KG

-  Just a comment on the new tags. Personally, I don't have any problems with them but I know for some people the very fine print on the tags is difficult to see. I helped a fellow angler this past week who was having trouble seeing the day of the month. He nearly clipped the wrong date which could have been trouble, especially with his grandson there with him. Perhaps, next year the print can be a little larger. Outside of this, I like the new tag system. DB  (This is a common observation and has been relayed to IFE.  Hopefully this will be improved for next year - Editor)

- Fished Salmonier by the old bridge on the flats. Plenty of anglers present but no salmon being caught. Water was up a bit. Only salmon being caught was by a huge seal near the bridge. Looks like he's been in the freshwater for a while because he is completely white. Fished North Harbour River. Lots of salmon but they were just sailing on through, not stopping to take a fly.   - TS

Just back from 4 days fishing BSG rivers. Water levels real good and good sign of fish in all the rivers - especially so for Middle Barachois and the Codroy where the runs of grilse have been inconsistent for the past 5 years. Released one 35 1/2 inches - my biggest ever - and the only big fish I hooked.. RM

Hello:  I have found it difficult to mark the plastic part of the new salmon tags, but my wife and I found something that will work. If you get hand held hole puncher and use those to punch holes in the new plastic tags.It works and the hole is definitely seen and the dates are easily marked.. Fishing later on today, but it is hot here. I understand I have to become a member of a salmon group to issue my reports in the future...I will not do that.  WS
(it will be a short while yet before that is implented. Re the hole punch...Another idea would be to have the holes already indented so it would just be a matter of pushing out the circle - Editor)

- Was fishing the Codroy Friday. Saw two guardians who were working the bushes quite hard - looking for signs of netting.  Maybe because of earlier reports - I was really pleased with their efforts.
Water levels at Codroy and in Bay St. George have been on the high side for two weeks, good for the fish - hard on the angler DH

June 26th

I fished the FORKS at the Barachois River on Friday (June 25).  Water level and temperature was good .  Managed to hook and lose 2 fish, rose a few others.   TP

Hello: My wife and I fished Salmon River (Main Brook) and we have had excellent fishing. I got two yesterday and my wife got two today. She lost another 5 and I lost one. The river is a little high , but great fishing. The black flies are horrible. Today I think if I wasn't holding on to a tree I would have been airborne...Now you know that's a lie...but the flies were thick.

The fish are showing up pass First pond, nothing showing below..but some showing at Carl's Landing. Nothing showing at the fork of the brook or the Iron Gate as yet...I guess the river is high so they are sailing through. This year it is early , but tonight is a full moon and they will come in on those tides..I trust you will have good fishing and remember that salmon fishing is not only about catching salmon..it is about so much more..

I wish my sons were home, but they are away at University pursuing degrees....more degrees...maybe they just should relax and enjoy salmon fishing..it is great therapy..

Last year I talked about people hooking and releasing far more fish than is permitted under law..I saw it happen again today..I have tried  but I guess money talks.. WS

June 25th

- Offensive Emails are flying in Bay St. George North stating that DFO is holding back salmon at the  Gallants trap.  NOTHING could be further from the truth!!!!  All salmon are released - PERIOD.   A terrible rumour for someone to start!  Please ignore anything you hear or receive regarding this.  It's utter nonsense. (Editor)

Fished the Gander today at Glenwood - Hooked and lost one grilse, saw about a dozen jump but they were not hanging around and  water is very high. Only  4 rods fishing.. One large fish played by CH  or about 10 min before his leader broke. There was one big fish finning in the pool below the straight shore but it would't rise for my flies. Heard reports of several fish retained on 24'th. JHB

EP emailed to say he released a 60 cm grilse at Home Pool on Harry's.

Fish atruck in at Serpentine River.  EM released several fish including a monster estimated  in the 30 lb that went way into the backing.  Had a picture to prove it!  Report also said that JC and RC did well.

- Was at Harry's River this morning.  Here's a summary of information gathered:
One fish released at Strawberry Pool.  No fish seen below the Gallants Bridge.  JS released one of about 15 lb downriver from Black Duck and hooked a grilse .
280 fish now through the trap at Gallants.  Kelts are still going out . Also information that an angler (now a poacher!) was apprehended with a 10 lb fish in his possession.  If that is correct, let's hope they throw the book at him! (Now confirmed that he was apprehended by FNI Guardians)   In our opinion, anyone who gets jail time from now on should have to serve it in the summer. (Editor)

- Released a nice grilse at little falls, Upper Humber and saw a few others hooked.   JF

June 24th

Hi, fished Lawn river this evening - got 5 rises hooked 1 water is not high

June 23rd

Hi, I heard rumors of poachers at work on the Robinson's and Crabbe's rivers again this year. I was talking with someone from the area who said 80+ were taken from Robinsons and 30+ at Crabbes. This might account for the slow fishing last weekend and why a grilse landed under Robinsons bridge last night seemed to have net marks on it. Where are all the river watcher's at? WN

Fished Big Falls (Brook Pool and The Long Reef) today. No luck. A few fish were taken. Surprised at how few anglers were there compared to the usual hoards. Speculation is that it's because people can't tamper with the tags . GOOD! Went to The Run down Mistaken Point way... Two fish landed and the occasional one seen. Water is still up a bit but not super high. A great day regardless :O) KP

June 22nd

Hi Keith, I was to Mistaken Point (Upper Humber) today, June 22. We fished from 6:30 AM to 12 noon. Water high but fishable, about a foot too high. Saw 5 or 6 fish jump, but did not rise a fish, there were three of us there, a buddy of mine and another fellow showed up later. No one rose a fish. We stopped at the Run on way up but no sign of a fish there, heard that there were several people fishing there but were long gone when we passed at 2 PM. Great day on the water. WLP

Hi guys, Just sent off a membership to this wonderful site. I will be traveling to Lomond this weekend and fishing inside Park waters from Stuckless bridge to the ocean from the 27th until about the 5th. The past 2 years I have got my permit from (Linda) the gatehouse in the campground and never had a problem. Just make sure you have your Provincial license already. I have never been charged for the permits for either salmon or trout (maybe they are part of my camp fees or park pass). Two years ago I fished this area for the first time (I actually had not held a license in about 15 years) and had a ball. I returned the same time last year and saw 1 fish. According to the few locals I met I went from the best year in decades to the worst. Needless to say I have been following the river reports with great anticipation for next week. This is probably my only week of fishing for the season - so excited I can't wait. I'll be sure to file a report when we get back.
Again - great site, excellent cause - congratulations. MF (SPAWN says Thanks!)

Fished Lomond River on Sunday, June 13th. It's still a little early but I managed to hook and tag my first fish of the year at Middle Pool on a green highlander. I only saw 2 other people on the river and they left after 1 hour of fishing. Good luck......S.H.

Has any one got info on Serpentine River? are salmon gone up above the falls yet?? PH

Just a quick report from my evening fishing at Southwest Brook on Saturday, June 19th. I fished a couple of pools up the Burgeo highway not far from TCH. One fellow came out and landed a small grilse about 3lbs. with lots of sea lice in about 10 casts on a small silver and green fly tied cossoboom style with a yellow collar. I walked up river to another small pocket of water about 75 yards upstream and promptly hooked a fish around 8lbs. in about 10 minutes after I watched the previous fish landed. I hooked it on a #6 Silver Tip Green Butt. The other guy and I rose another fish each but nothing else hooked. Keep up the good work! JT

National Park fishing licenses have no charge. They can be obtained at Cooleys in Wiltondale. They were not available until last weekend. I had a park warden go out of his way trying to find our group permits last Saturday. Eventually he took our provincial information wished us tight lines and sent us on our way. KC

Number one son fished Lomond this weekend and only struck one fish. I fished Big Falls yesterday with JM. Water is a bit high, but we hooked 4, tagged 1, released 1, lost the rest. KC

June 21st

Hi there....fished Lomond River yesterday for about 4 hrs , from Simpsons Pool down to Campbells then moved down to Mckenzies Pool....only saw three fish at Campbells ...river was "high".

"MAJOR HASSLE" in  trying to obtain necessary park passes etc. Had to drive up to Wiltondale on Saturday to obtain correct information and passes after three long distance calls during business hours  -  Offices are closed after 6:00pm and reopen around 9:00 am.  NOT  much good if you want to go out at 5:00am!!!

Parks Canada web page shows nothing about what the requirements are to go down river to Middle pool and Campbell's and any other area towards the salt water that lie within the Park boundary. time for them to wake up.

Anyway will try Lomond River later this week to see if conditions improve. go to get a chance to fish to pay for my "EXTRA" fish permit and seasonal pass.

All unnecessary since I have all ready "paid for my provincial license.....any help out there SPAWN??...maybe rattle someone's chain??? SC  (We can certainly try! - Ed)

Fished Piper's Hole River and Cape Rodger River this weekend past. Good fishing in Piper's Hole, rose a few, hooked and lost one, landed another.  Cape Rodger the fish were there but not taking the fly........Any one have any reports on the Gambo river or Middle Brook?   BB

Hello All, just wanted to pass on a little bit of information on Middle Brook River in Gambo,. Fshed there Sunday morning  - total 7 rods, hooked 2 fish and seen another 7 hooked. A good few salmon on the move the way things are looking it will be a good year.RJ

Fished Salmonier on Sunday, June 20.  Plenty of anglers present.  There were a few fish around; managed  to hook and release a small grilse.   There were plenty of fish at the Governors Pool, (albeit they were very hard to see!!!) The  water was perfect for fishing. TW

From ML - (rec'd today) (June 17th) Fished Pincents Falls, got there around 4:00am'ish.  Seen a lot of fish going through the run, 3 fish landed, one being a nice jack that weighed around the 8-10 lb range.  2 of the three landed were tagged.  Still a lot of water on, but still a good sign for early in the season.

(June 20th) Fished Northeast river, Placentia, few fish working there way through the river, I fished from the top pool bellow the holding pool all the way down to the weedy hole.  Seen one tagged that morning, never hooked anything myself this weekend, a few rises but such is the luck.  A lot of flies over the salmon on the Northeast weekend, so by Saturday afternoon they weren't too interested in flying.  Better luck next time I hope. - ML

June 20th

Fished Sou'west again this morning, until 9:30, (June 20th), Didn't see a thing. I don't know where they're getting fish but it's not from the bridge down. A few fellows there didn't see a thing  - oh my!  GP

Fished Indian River today (19th) many rises took 1 fish in less than 1 hr . 30-40 fish hooked ,maybe 20 taken.  tTings seem to be picking up in the last few day.   Trying my luck again in the morning. LU

June 19th

High tide at Corner Brook was at 6:02 so I decided to go to Quarry Pool , Lower Humber River, at 4:30 pm and fish until 7:00 pm - hopefully hitting a run (which I've seen a few times before over the years) on the high tide.  Stayed until 7:00 and not a sign of a fish. Around 6 pm something caught my eye about 75-100 feet off. It was a large seal...It bobbed up and down as it floated with the current and then went under...That was the last I saw io it.  Seeing salmon would have been nice - the seal made it interesting and no doubt it was there for one reason - FISH!  A seal has been hanging around the Humber estuary for the past month....maybe it was the same one??  KP

Fished Sou-west this morning from the bridge down to the salt water, never seen a fish - 5-6 people  and nobody seen anything up to 10:30 this morning there anyways - don't know where bb fished, but gonna try it again later this evening,

Are there any fish up to Gallants yet, please inform us if theres any please.  (Slooowww at Gallants..few through the trap - Editor)

Fished South West Brook, BSG this morning. Released two small grilse and retained one. Good morning fishing. Water levels high but going down. Not a lot of fish showing. Should be good the weekend as more fish is entering the river. BB

Fished Harry's River this evening (June 16th) for a couple of hours.  I fished Ledge Pool while my father and our friend fished Green Cabin and Flat pool.  Water wasn't as high as we had anticipated and was receding swiftly according to the water marks on some of the rocks.  However, no sign of any fish!  It was still good to wet a line with friends! (Very few fish gone through the Gallants trap as of yesterday morning - One released down river from Gallants est. at 15 lb - Editor)

June 18th

Just a note to pass along. Fished Big Falls on Tuesday and met Spawn president John McCarthy for the 1st time ever. Struck up a conversation at the boat house and he took us across the river, showing us the best places to fish.  Wouldn't you know it, we had several hook-ups and John did quite well, hooking several fish, including 2 beauties in the 12lb. range. Our rivers could use more anglers like him, a true gentleman indeed!  DB - Gander

June 17th

Thanks to Chris M. for handling the river reports while I was away!!
Here's a fishway update:  1,300 thourgh Bishop's Falls as of this morning; None through Torrent River fishway but plenty at the entrance, which means they are moving through the river; Good showing at Western Arm Brook and plenty waiting to move up; Harry's River trap has about 40..not a lot showing up just yet;  None at Corner Brook Stream trap.  Apparently plenty of fish at Beaver Brook near Roddington.

JM reported a good showing at Big Falls with a mixture of large and small fish. He hooked 7 and others did well.  (Editor).

Just got back from fishing the Cape Roger on the Burin Penninsula, Sunday evening was a little slow, as the water was a little higher than usual, not much in the way of fish being caught, there were lots of fish but no flyers. Monday seemed as it picked up a little with more fish wanting to fly. Tuesday was half decent as anglers were getting a few more fish. On Wednesday morning it seemed to be getting better as there were only my self and 1 other angler and we had a ball, I tagged 1, lost a couple more and released 1, the other angler lost a couple, released 1, and had countless rises. It seemed earlier in the week that fish were just moving thru and as the week went by they seemed to want to take the fly. I think in the next few days it should be excellent when the main run hits. Tight lines to one and all. TF

June 16th

Does anyone know whether there has been a run of salmon on the Gambo River? Thinking about heading to the straights (narrows) but I'd hold off if there wasn't any sign of life yet. LP

Fished Harry's River at Ledge's and Grilse Pools on the 14th in the evening. There were no fish moving and no fishermen either. I drove down to Robinson's by the bridge and saw a couple of fish moving above the bridge but no takers. The fishermen I met indicated there were few grilse in the river. PO

3 days in BSG Monday to Wednesday. Started great, hooking three fish in 30 mins on the Pocket at the Codroy, losing the first two quickly, but then releasing a superb fat 31 inch fish. That, however was it, as weather didn't co-operate - heavy rain Tuesday night had all the rivers very high, and very high winds made fishing a challenge. There are fish around however, and even in high water I rose a couple today. Fishing will be great in a couple of days- but I'll be back in St. John's! DL

June 15th

Living so close to a river makes it hard to sleep in.So the past few day I have been getting up early and fishing the Expolits. Saturday I fished by the old gas station(Ellis) and hooked and landed a fish. I couldn't belive my luck.Only 15 minutes into my first fishing trip and I had one. But my luck was short lived. I have fished every mourning since then and have not hooked anouther. But its still early yet. I did see a few caught which is a good sign. It is only going to be getting better from now on. Give it a couple of weeks and the fishing should be real good. J

Hi folks, Fished Cape Roger this past weekend with my 6 year old son. I didn't personally fish that much, as I was showing him the ropes. There were a few fish showing, but the water was a little high and they seemed to be moving on through - a few more anglers than I expected to see for this time of year, and the traffic will undoubtedly increase over the next few days - the run should really be on by the end of this week, especially if the water levels stay up. BS

June 14th

Fished Lower Humber (Boom Siding) Sunday evening, saw one fish that looked large. No rises or hook-ups. BB

Fished Big Falls this evening, about 25 rods in the water and 5 boats. Fished for about 3 hours. Witnessed 7 fished hooked, none landed or retained. A lot of big fish moving through but they are not takin' or sitting around too long. I had a couple of rises but no takes in Hospital Pool and on the ledge. Water is still a bit high, but with the rain expected tonight and tomorrow expect it to be even higher tomorrow night. Still pretty productive for early June. Give it 2 weeks and it should be half decent. CC

Today, June 14th; myself and a friend fished Cape Rogers at salt-water salmon pool for two hours from daylight till 8:00 a.m.. There were several fish in the pool; however, only saw two fished hooked. Water conditions today were excellent! SOS

Fished Salmon Pond watershed (Glenwood) extensively over the weekend. No salmon seen. JC

Fished Exploits yesterday for 4 hrs, seen 25 - 30 fish, Never hooked any but there were a few rises...Went to the fish ladder and there were a lot of fish waiting to go up through..They let 15-20 through while we were there...They all looked like big fish... Heading to Big Falls on Friday hoping to get a few tight lines..RA

Fished South West on Sat 12th for the morning there was two adults and my 12 year old son, the adults both played two fish each and my son played one. Went back out there today Mon 14th. Me and two friends went out for the day. I played three and the two played three between them. We only retained one for supper, having a great year on South West. A couple of my buddies were out to Galants having a look to see if there was any fish in Harrys. They never saw a fish at the bridge or down to the ledges. Tight Lines. JWW

Fished little falls area on upper humber fish are moving. saw 2 rise, none hooked. BF

I was wondering if anyone had fished Harry's River over the past few day?. My 10 year old son is starting to fish this year and can't wait to fish harry's!! DJ

Any reports on the Cape Roger river? thanks. BB

Has anyone been fishing Big Falls (Humber)? JK

June 13th

Fished Lomond today. Saw a few fish but nothing hooked. KC

Fished Southwest Fri. Sat. and Sun. I did not lay eyes on one fish. I fished both sides of the bridge and along Burgeo Rd. Some fish were taken throughout the weekend though. As of sunday afternoon water level was dropping rapidly. CC

Just returned from the Bay St. George rivers. They were cold and a little high but will soon be down to average height. Two of us hooked 24 fish in 5 days, of which about 2/3 were oversize. We hooked fish in Crabbes, Robinsons, Middle Barachois, and Fischells. Robinsons and Crabbes have decent numbers of fish. Grand Codroy seemed to have just a few big ones in yet. DD

New Member here, just wondering if anyone can provide some information to me on directions to some good fishing areas on the Salmonier River and the Terra Nova River (Glovertown). I haven`t done much Salmon Fishing in the last 10 years as I have been working out of province and what fishing I did when home was in the Placentia area. Anything would help (Google Map skecth, simple directions from prominent Landmarks, etc). Email member here

Hello there, just wondering if any fish have made there way to Middle Brook in Gambo? (RJ)

Hello anyone have any reports on the Humber (Big Falls). Thanks. JM.

Sou'west Brook very high - it's up in the woods. Was out there last night still a few fish on the go around the bridge and in Bottom Brook part of the river. Brook is that high in the woods, seen a salmon with a chainsaw on his back lol...JUST KIDDING... happy fishing. Good job to the fellow who called on the poachers! Keep them bloody poachers away.

Just wondering if there are any salmon moving on lower section of Terra Nova River ( Glovertown section)? RJ,/p>

Hi guys...Just wanted to pass on a report. I fished Salmonier on Tuesday June 8th at Pincent Falls. Including myself there were 5 other anglers. The water is high and no sign of fish. There were no fish rose or hooked while I was there. As for the seal, I have seen a seal on Salmonier for the past 2 seasons, I have seen it from the old bridge up to the flats and on one occasion it was up to about the top part of the flats.

Dear author....
I was the angler who reported these two so-called "anglers" on the river ( Salmonier) this past Sunday evening. I had watched them throughout the day and at one point, one of them were near up to his waist in Ryan's Pool casting directly upstream. He would then tip his rod down, and rip up on his line.  Throughout the day they were hooking and losing fish in Ryan's, but retained one very small salmon just before i went to speak with them.  To me, it looked like the fish was way too small. The angler went to the far shore and it looked as if he was going to tag the salmon, but i was unable to tell if he did. I did know that he had jigged it.  At around 7pm or so, I went over and spoke with then and told them that  the wardens were watching them, they were going to be charged as what they were doing was illegal.   I asked them how many fish they hooked, and they said 6 between them.  Quite disheartening when you think that these salmon will not spawn and will stay at Ryan's Pool nearly all summer until they return to the sea again.  Both did not like my comments to them and they told me in a nut shell to mind my own business.  In hindsight, I should have cut their line and got them wet, but I kept my cool and went for a lunch. When  I  did my cell phone beeped...service...I couldn't believe it!  I took it out and made a call to a DFO officer in Placentia who told me that either himself or 2 guardians would be there asap.  I waited until around 8 pm or so and had to leave to come home, but when iIarrived at the truck I was met by the 2 guardians who took my info and story as to what these guys were doing.  While travelling to work the next morning i received a call from the officer I had called and he said that they had got them with an untagged salmon and would be investigating it further.  I was humbled that he took the time to call me and he was quite appreciative in my efforts.(That goes for all of us! Well done "J" - Editor)

I'll be watching the rivers closely this summer and for those of you that are out there to do harm...be sure that I'll report you in a second.  J.

June 9th

Fished the flats on Salmonier last Friday the 4th. I was there for low tide and high tide, no sign of any fish whatsoever. SE

Hi guys, - In response to RB's question about fish on the Salmonier - there are fish on the Salmonier, though it is somewhat sporadic.  The poachers have been out already at Pinsent Falls - two young "anglers" were reported by another fishermen to DFO - he called DFO on his cellphone from Pinsent Falls.  To their credit, the guardians weren't long arriving, and nabbed the two in the act.  They have apparently been charged with possessing untagged salmon, and possible charges of jigging are supposedly pending.  Unbelievable.  Hats off to the angler who reported them!  Also worthy to note that another angler came across a seal having a snooze on the bank of the lower Salmonier - a telltale sign that there are a few fish around, but unfortunate that seals are in the river.  The water is undoubtedly high now with the torrential rains of the last two days.  MBA IFE also got a net in BSG - No salmon in it, thankfully - Editor

No fish up to Salmonier as of June 5. The only thing I saw was a big fat seal down by old bridge waiting for the fish to come in . MW

Robinson's and Crabbe's - Caller last evening said both rivers were "In the woods" when he passed by yesterday. Editor

June 8th

While many anglers were saying that because we had little snow this winter the rivers would be low - It isn't so!  Rain throughout the Island part of Newfoundland and Labrador has kept water levels high, for the most part.  DFO says the trap records certainly don't indicate an early run as others have suggested.   Editor

I was wondering if there are any fish up on the Salmonier river yet? RB

Any update on the Exploits River? Any fish moving in? Are there good signs at the mouth?  CM

A few fish have now been caught below Bishops Falls. Water was 10.5C and at a normal level. Going to try tonight after all that rain we just had. The anglers seem to out early this year with some fishing below Grand Falls already. Cheers - BB

(15-29 mm rain expected today! Editor)

I'm going to be in the Deer Lake area in the next couple offdays and I'm wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction to do some salmon fishing? AD

Fished Southwest Brook by the salt water on the 5th in the late afternoon/evening. I had no luck however two fish were retained and another was released. Plenty of salmon by the saltwater but they are just swimming through and not stopping for anything. Water rose slightly from the time we got there to the time we left. RB

Myself & my son fished Harry's yesterday evening June 5 at Home Pool and The Flats didn't see any movement at all.  P.H.

June 6th

Fished Southwest Brook BSG.  Water level medium high.  Anglers on most pools by the looks of the cars parked there.  We fished Inside Cliff Pool and Line Pool....No fish seen and other anglers we spoke to said the same. Left SW and went to Lower Robaires on Harry's River...Again, high water and no sign of fish.  Checked the pool below the bridge at Gallants...nothing there. One fish through the Gallants trap on Thursday past. KP

June 5th

Just home from Sou'west Brook, a wee bit high but not too bad I guess  A few fish in Tidal Pool and Salt Water Pool early this morning,  jumping and moving up stream, 1 fish caught and released in Tidal Pool, one fish caught and kept in Snow's Run.

BS had on three fish at Southwest Brook Retained one.  No other fish observed taken.
June 4th

Just returned from two days on Bay St. George Rivers. Good sign of fish on Southwest and credible reports of fish on Middle Barachois and Robinson's - very positive news - our party of three hooked six fish and rose others, tagged a small grilse for the pot.  P&H

JWW Fished

Southwest thru June 3rd landed 1 large and tagged a grilse at Louie's then fished just above the tidal pool and hooked two small grilse.  Great first day.

June 3rd

Grand Codroy - EM told us today he hooked "A ginat of a fish" at The Pocket -   Said a couple of other large fish hooked.  Water high but fishable.

Upper Humber River - Fished the Cache (Cache Rapids) on day one and two with no signs of life.  Wondering if anyone seen anything move on the Lower Humber????  Water levels are prime for this time of year......lets hope it doesn't get too low as the weather warms up.  Tight Lines...DC

Lawn River - Hey, went to Lawn River today - no fish there.  Does anyone now where there is salmon on the boot?"

Exploits River - ERMA reports 25 fish through Bishop's Falls up to this morning - "With a good sign below."

June 2nd

Fishell's River: EP called to say he'd hooked a nice one estimated at 15 lb on upper Fishell's River.  After a tug of war and a good jump it gained it's freedom.  Water levels reported good.

Most anglers feel the runs are a couple of weeks early this year. Last year we blamed late ice for poor returns on the majority of rivers.  This year sea ice conditions were much better - who knows! Let's hope we get a bumper showing.

June 1st

Water levels were reasonable in Bay St. George North Rivers however the high water levels at Grand Codroy sent some Port aux Basques anglers to Crabbes and Middle Barachois where they enjoyed success, releasing 8 at Hole in The Rock and 2 more at Crabbes. A Mitchell fly was doing the trick. Middle Barachois is catch and release only. It was nice to see that more anglers are accepting C & R and still enjoying their day on the river.

Robinson's River - At White Cliff Pool anglers hooked four fish this morning with one retained. This afternoon JM released one there.

Crabbes River - BS released an 8-9 pounder this morning. We went to White Rocks this afternoon but no luck.

Middle Barachois - KP rose a fish below the highway bridge and he and BM traveled down-river where a normally promising pool skunked them. Most the the success, as mentioned earlier was up-river.

The most promising results came from Southwest Brook where information garnered by DI indicated 20 fish were hooked.

Fished opening morning with number one son Richard and a friend GH. Fished inside on Southwest Brook in three different spots. Never saw any silver. Had a visit from the River Guardians which was nice to see and they informed us of several fish hooked at Seal Pool as well 6 fish tagged near the salt water. Still nice to get out on the water. KC

Fischell's River - KP and BM fished several lies down river from the TCH bridge with no fish observed. (and told a few lies)

The presence of Mergansers on several rivers is a good indicator of juvenile fish. Let's hope they leave enough for the future!
